- Betty-Box is an automatic sorting machine
- for household packaging,
- at the general public’s disposal.
- What is « Betty-Box » doing?
- It receives various containers and thrown away packaging,
- It identifies different materials and products,
- It sorts out household packaging by category,
- It eliminates non-recyclable elements (corks, sticks,…),
- it weighs and measures supplies (1 litter bottle, one can,…),
- it sets a price and inform the supplier,
- It keeps recyclable elements into a « finished product »
which can be directly used by involved factory (glass, plastic,
paper…).
- …all this in a small space and in short-time.
- Why Betty-Box ?
- Betty-Box encourages people to bring voluntarily recyclable household
packaging by presenting them with money,
- Betty-Box allows to reduce selection and collection costs and to
recover the treatment of salvaged matters.

- Betty-Box is able to distinguish the following materials/packaging:
- plastics : PET, PEHD, PP, PS, PVC,
- both oil and un-eating packaging,
- glass : white, brown, green, jars,
- cardboard, packs and tetra packs,
- aluminum cans, aluminum / iron, iron,
- iron food preserves,
- opaque heavy components (flowerpots, earthenware pots,…).
- Betty-Box advantages:
- Simple, ergonomical and secured
setting down system,
- Reliable recognition of various dumped materials,
- Reliable recognition of different dumped products forms,
- Quick conditioning of recyclable elements related to the dumped
products according to materials consumers industrials’ schedule of
conditions (glassworkers, steelworkers, plastics specialists…).

- Betty-Box results from the combination of different
- dumping, identification and conditioning posts.
- The dumping post of packaging by the public is at once:
- the interface through which a user dumps his recyclable packaging,
- the interface which gives him the pieces of information necessary to
understand and to know the sum he will be given.
- The dumping post is composed of packaging support each one constituted
by
a shaft on which a packaging is entered through its own opening.
Then, a rail allows to move each shaft to the different identification
posts.
- Why using shafts to place packaging?
- Consumer must take the possible cork off from the packaging in order
to insert it on the vertical
shaft. Such a gesture is absolutely important in the glass and plastic
matters recovering process. Indeed, it allows the very first
elimination of undesirable matter (as defined in the schedules of
conditions of industrials who use these materials).
- The introduction movement which forces packaging to turn over (its
opening is generally turned to the top) allows to perfect its contain
emptying.
- By making going in-abutment the bottom of the packaging on the shaft
high extremity, the whole backs of packaging stand at the same height
so that identification and/or conditioning operations are possible and
facilitate.

- Betty-Box results from the combination of different
- dumping, identification and conditioning posts.
- To identify / distinguish packaging, Betty-Box uses:
- A camcorder ensures the packaging visual identification : form, color
and transparency,
- A spectrometer distinguishes plastics between themselves,
- An inductive system identifies metals,
- Electronic scales indicates the packaging weight (so that glass and
plastics are distinguished well if their shapes are equivalent),
- Posts combination allows to identify the most of packaging
- which currently exist.
- Betty-Box’s packaging method:
- One post for the cutting of plastic security ring allows to take
automatically off the plastic bottles flange,
- One post to cut the glass bottles neck,
- One post to brush packaging outer surface.
- This mechanism also includes an evacuation post which goes to storage
zones or to other transfer and conditioning lines, etc., dedicated to
identified packaging.

- Betty-Box has a “supervision” and “automation” software :
- This software manages and pilots the whole machine soft wares:
- Man-Machine interface and data bases management software,
- Camera piloting software,
- Spectrometer piloting software,
- Automatic functioning software.
- This software, from both all the other soft wares results and sensors,
defines the category of the set down object, then pilots the actions which have to be done.
- The Supervisor tells the user the payment corresponding to his supply,
then brings the conditioned product in the appropriated tanks.
- All the machine parameters are standing in a data base which can be
easily changed by the maintenance or Internet, so that classes and
actions on recyclable objects can be added or changed.
